USB Flash Drive problems

I have an eight gigabyte Memorex USB flash drive I bought from the bookstore about a year ago; recently I found that my T-400 was unable to recognize that the flash drive. Plugging the flash drive into any of the USB slots on my laptop will set off the lights on the flash drive and will have Windows give off the noise it makes when plugging a device in, but under My Computer there will be no entry for a removable device. This flash drive is however recognized on my roommate's computer...

Any ideas what is causing this?

Safely removing hardware

I had the same problem last year. Have you been doing the "safely remove hardware" procedure before taking out the flash drive? If not, that could be the problem.

I haven't tried using this flash drive since my computer was reimaged to XP

It may be trying to assign itself a drive letter already in use.

Right click My Computer, click Manage, and go to Disk Management. You may see your flash drive under a letter that is already in use in My Computer (i.e. for a network drive). Just right click on the drive and change the default drive letter to something not in use.

Changing it from H: to F: worked, although neither of them were being used

Thanks

I'd avoid changing to F though, as a network drive would interfere with that. A bit lower in the alphabet, like X, would be safer.

That is an excellent point, although it seems it has switched itself back to H and is now working
