Foreign Language

Is anyone else signed up for a foreign language? I signed up for Spanish and I really don't want to take it but I thought we had to our first semester. I thought we took placement tests during orientation and then were placed in the right level for our first semester or is that just whatever semester we want to take it. I'm really confused.

I'm taking spanish and you do need 2 semesters of a forien language to graduate but you do not need to take it during freshman year. what they do is you choose your language class then you take a placement test to make sure you choose the right one. At least that is what it said in the course guide.

French student here. I signed up for the class that I'm almost certain that I'll be placed in. Besides which, currently I think that I'm a French major and it's a class that I'm going to need for that.

I signed up for Russian because I've always been interested in it and after taking Spanish all throughout high school, I just feel its time to learn something new lol.

I plan on continuing French, but I am really interested in learning more languages at college.

ditto. Just continuing French first so I can complete the language requirement, and then plan on taking some other languages afterwards.

Let me plug Arabic. I'm starting my second semester in the spring, and I absolutely love it. If you study the way you do for every other class, it is NOT as hard as people have you believe. It's got small classes, but the program needs to grow. The two profs are amazing and it's a very marketable skill. It's also a requirement for the Middle Eastern Studies minor to take either Arabic or Hebrew.

But for anyone starting a non-romance language, I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the alphabet before the class starts. That could give you a week or two head start. Best move I made for Arabic. Just get the alphabet off the web or a dictionary and make flash cards and do them for 10 mins a day for a week or so. It helped a lot.

But yeah, Arabic's where it's at.
