Battery/Possibly Power Chord Problems?
I'm not even sure if anyone will be able to answer this question until I am back on campus, but I am starting to get a little worried about my computer. Probably about three weeks ago, my computer stopped charging.

I rarely ever unplug it--especially at school--which when I read up about that (CNET, & on the actual laptop battery gauge) it said it wasn't a good thing & to let it hover somewhere around 96%, which I did assign to it at the battery health area thing (I apologize for my agonizingly horrendous skills of describing computer problems!)

Anyway, I had my computer unplugged for about two hours and it got down to about 55% battery life. I put it back in my room, plugged it in, and walked away for a bit. The next morning when I went to check it (I keep my computer on almost always, but I have all the power-saver/sleep mode/whatever it is called settings on so that it's not just sitting there, on, using up all its power & battery.) and the battery was still at 55%.

So, being that I am slightly inquisitive and easily annoyed by things of this nature, I tried to figure out what was wrong. I clicked the battery picture & went to "improve battery health" where it told me my battery was in the "yellow" area which is less than perfect, apparently? It told me I should re-condition my battery. So I attempted this & nothing happened! The only thing that did actually happen was that my laptop went down to a power supply of about 46%.

A few days later, it was down to 44%. It's now at 40%.

Now, I keep it plugged in so that it won't lose a significant amount of battery power at once. I've tried different outlets throughout the house with no luck. When the power chord is plugged in, the computer recognizes this (& when it is not, it also recognizes that), but the battery power still continues to drop.

So now I am not sure what I need to do next. Do I need a new battery? A new power chord? What should I do? Does Drew's warranty cover a new battery or am I going to have to spend the $130-something on a new battery (this seems to be an average price from what i've googled)? or is it easier (read: less exspensive) to fix than this?

Well, the warranty doesn't cover new power chords, as it doesn't cover guitars. Also, batteries are considered a "consumable" and are only waranteed for a year. The problem you're looking at could be something wrong with the battery itself, or the computer. If you have any friends around with a Drew computer, try putting the battery in another computer and seeing if it charges in the other computer. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until the fall.

But if you do decide that you want to get a new one, Drew can order it for you (but you'll still have to pay). I'm not sure about the price, but it might be significantly lower than you can get anywhere else. It's worth checking. The computer store supervisor is Jason Slipoy, and his extension is 3317.

If the computer is from last year's Computer Initiative you would want to contact us befor fall because we got the computers in august, and thus your battery would be older then a year when you bring it to us. You can, however, bring the computer to the helpdesk in person if you live close, but if you can't get to drew yourself you can mail the computer to us. Call Jason Slipoy at (973)-408-3317 for the specific mailing address.

It probably is not something wrong with the power cord since it is providing power to the computer. The battery or the computer can be at fault. We can check this by using another battery to charge in your computer and trying to charge your battery in another computer that we know is working correctly.

As the previous posts indicate, the battery is only warrantied for a year, but the rest of the computer (including the power cord) is warrantied for four years.

If it recognizes the power cord being plugged in and when you take the power cord out it recognizes that as well then you probably need a new battery. How old is your laptop??? If it is over a year and a half then it could be the battery. If you aren't willing to spend the 130 dollars then look on amazon.com for your battery they usually have it for about 30-50 dollars cheaper depending on how old the computer is etc... let me know if you have any more questions or if you just want to chat.

That's why the best thing to do would be to test it before ordering a new battery. Also, do contact Jason for prices through Drew before you buy it elsewhere. How long you've had the computer doesn't really make a difference whether it is the battery or not.
I think CNS's summer hours are 9-5 weekdays, but I'm not sure on that.

Thats right for the summer hours, excluding holidays and such...

And just to reiterate previous posts, it would be best to bring the computer to the desk before August so they can test the machine and determine the problem while the battery is still under warranty. Why bother looking up prices if you can get the part replaced under warranty?

well getting to drew before august will prove more than a little difficult as a work 40-50 hours a week at home in ct..about 2 hours away. i have the 2004 CI laptop..thinkpad R51?

i've looked online at prices and can find the 9-cell battery for about $84...and on ebay (which i would be wary about) for about $45.

Unfortunately, the battery for the r51 laptops is no longer covered under warranty. If you need to purchase a new one, you can obviously search through online retailers (I would be suspicious of auctions though), or you could contact CNS who can order you a new battery from IBM.

I guess it's a choice of cost vs dependability. If you order online,, you will probably find a better price somewhere, but there's always the risk that you're getting the wrong battery. If you go through CNS, the specific part is ordered directly from IBM, but the cost might be more than is available other places.

I personally would suggest going through CNS (God knows I have certainly ended up ordering the wrong parts for things just because the listed description was inaccurate). But I should disclose that since I am an employee of CNS, my opinion might be biased.
