Snack Bar and Sales Tax

Can someone explain why the Snack Bar taxes students if they do not use their drew i.d to pay for it?

I was under the impression that students are exempt from taxes on food.

"There is a similar exception for school cafeterias, which are not required to collect sales tax on food and beverages sold to students. N.J.A.C. 18:24-12.5."

Not sure if that only applies to publicly funded schools or not.

We are, but snack bar employees have no way to verify that a person is a student unless the student uses an ID.

I am not sure they understand this concept. I showed my Drew id, but I was still charged a tax because I did not use the id as a point of payment. I used cash. I do think someone should check into it. It seems a bit unfair if you have no cash on your card.

Yea, I have showed my i.d as well but they still charge a tax. Someone told me it was to encourage students to buy more points, but it does not seem fair to use a tax to promote a schools point plan.

the reasoning

I thought the reason that we don't pay meal tax if they are purchased with points is that the amount we pay for a meal plan has been already taxed, and therefore, if we were charged on a meal plan points, we would be doubly taxed. I am not sure how true that is, but I remember it being told to me a year ago when there was an issue on points being taxed.

Scott Oswald is the Food Service Director.

Just got an e-mail back from scott and it seems that students are only exempt when using their cards. By law, cash or credit has to be taxed. I appreciate the prompt response from Mr. Oswald.
