The Campus Post Office
Or mail room, or whatever the official title is here. I am usually very understanding, but the service in our post office is driving me crazy. If a package is delivered on Monday at 8:00am for example, I should not have to wait to get it on Wednesday or later. Yet, when I pick up my package on Wednesday, there will be another one waiting that was delivered Wednesday at 11. Where is the logic here? What is going on?

Furthermore, pay day is on Thursday. This may have more to do with payroll than the post office, but I ought to get my check Thursday, not Friday or Saturday.

Bottomline: If it takes a package 2 days to get from California to Madison, NJ it should not take said package a week to get from Pepin to the UC.

Catherine Y. Jordan 02-23-2011 06:40 PM

I understand your pain! I also know that they've changed staff a number of times in the last two months alone! At the end it goes to communication and the seemingly lack of it between departments. Also mailing is occasionally understaffed (as the best of the departments are). In some way you need to allow two extra days on any delivery :(

Brandon W. Talley 02-23-2011 06:45 PM

I've also had the issue several times now where my mail, even the official stuff like pay checks from drew is put into other peoples mail boxes. Its not cool when my check marked 369 is some how in 381? Hows that work other than laziness or lack of any sense of a work ethic. I miss the other guys, I know they pissed off drew and I know why they were fired but still they did a much better job.

Connor M. Bradley 02-23-2011 06:58 PM

Yeah, I get really frustrated with package deliveries also. Once my packages are delivered to campus it often takes 3-9 days for a slip to show up in my box; which seems crazy considering the package only took 2 days to get here from god knows where.

I understand that it takes some time to sort through stuff with the system Drew uses for mail, but when it starts taking 3 or more days to get mail from Pepin to the UC it starts to be unacceptable.

Yeah, as an aside i really miss the guy with tattoos and the guy with dreads who used to work in the mail room. They were so friendly and they worked hard to get us our mail on time. When they worked here drew checks showed up on Thursdays.
Rabble rabble rabble....

Sara A. Storer 02-23-2011 07:45 PM

I totally understand where you guys are all coming from. My mom ordered me a new phone and paid around $20 to overnight it. I checked my mailbox 3 times in one day and asked the guy about it, but it wasn't there. I came at the very end of the day in hopes it would be in my box, but it wasn't. The guy screamed at me and made me go in the back of the mail room and look myself. I just think its ridiculous to waste that kind of money if I'm not going to get the package the next day, anyway.

Does anyone know who we could bring these complaints to formally?

Katharene J. Suarez 02-24-2011 12:50 AM

I've been wondering that and honestly I have no clue. I just figured I'd start with a post here and see how many other people agree and hope we might collectively figure something out.

Jordan M. Maslin 02-24-2011 12:53 AM

I'm scared to death whenever I need to ship anything expensive to school. $1200 worth of photo equipment sitting in the mailroom for 3 days because they don't sort it or give me a card doesn't make me happy, especially with the way I've seen them treat packages.

Jon D. Squicciarini 02-24-2011 02:30 PM

Hey everyone. I am from the SGA and I have also had some ridiculous experiences with the Drew Mail system. If you want I can talk to someone in the Administration for you all and find out what exactly is going on. Are you all ok with me taking down your names and putting you on an email list so I can update you when I find out what is wrong with the god awful post office?

Brandon W. Talley 02-24-2011 08:36 PM

go ahead they don't really listen to the sga but your welcome to attempt it. It'd work far better for a large group to just show up in the pepin mail center and ask for their boss

Jordan R. Stamper 02-25-2011 10:04 AM

Yeah, you can try because frankly, I'm very very tired of not getting my paycheck on time because they just don't feel like giving them or are putting them in the wrong box. It's Friday morning and we're supposed to have our paychecks on Thursday by five. Did I have my paycheck then? No, of course not. Do I have my paycheck now? No. I know people don't think students need money for really anything in particular, but believe it or not, some of us have bills and I would appreciate having my money on time.

Hannah E. Wolfe 02-25-2011 11:37 AM

Absolutely, you can add my name to the list as well if you want.

Drew really ought to reimburse us for how much money is wasted on shipping due to the shitty organization of the mailroom. I live in North Carolina and it's far cheaper getting prescriptions filled at home than in Madison (50$ from the Madison Pharmacy? hell no.) including the cost for my mom to ship them to me; then having them withheld in the mailroom for a week or so not only proves a waste of my family's money, but could also be detrimental health-wise. The mailroom staff have no idea the degree of urgency of what's being shipped there, and there is no reason NOT to receive our mail on time.

Also, just saying, the overall disrespect of students' mail is pretty disappointing. On several occasions I've ordered (paperback) books, they're shipped here in a manila envelop, and then folded/curled up/wedged into my mailbox. Would it take that much more of your time to fill out one more yellow slip, rather than fuck up my shit? This is a university, everyone's going to be ordering books for class since that's what we're here for, just sd;lkfjsdlfj;s be respectful! So frustrating.

Connor M. Bradley 02-25-2011 02:29 PM

That would be real cool Jon. Thanks.

Katharene J. Suarez 02-25-2011 02:31 PM

You can definitely take my name. Thanks, at least we're starting somewhere.

UPDATE: I also feel the need to express that it we are not necessarily criticizing all of the employees in the post office. Some are quite nice, some are slow and don't work, but we can't necessarily blame them for not getting us our mail if it's not getting to them first. The whole process has problems. Just a clarification.

Brandon W. Talley 02-25-2011 05:19 PM

btw Why not skip the whole proposal and go see Kevin or Chief Evans since they are over the mail here and supervise it. If the SGA shows up and says something they might actually take real action rather then let it float in limbo

Jon D. Squicciarini 02-27-2011 11:20 PM

I wasn't planning on doing any kind of proposal, I was actually just going to physically walk over to the mail center and ask them who their supervisor is, then I was going to walk over there and demand to speak with that individual. I find that at a place like Drew it's easier to just get in people's faces of you want anything done. Otherwise they find it easy to ignore you. I will definitely do this during the week. I only asked to use your names because I want to give specific examples when I talk to the admin. I hope you all got your paychecks by now! Stupid mail system.

Sara A. Storer 02-28-2011 01:12 PM

That's fine, I hope something will get accomplished! My experience with the mail room and some of the employees has been so awful and disrespectful I have left practically in tears. Thanks for helping us out!

James A. Matarrese 02-28-2011 02:18 PM

Yeah, +1 on the medication point. I get my Rx filled all the way out in California because it's $15 instead of $120 at the Madison Pharmacy. Problem is, I've had problems more than once with the mailroom not putting the slip for my insulin in the box for several days. It's bad news when I don't get that stuff in a timely fashion -- both for me and for people around me.

Jordan M. Maslin 02-28-2011 07:29 PM

Edited summary: My package was delivered at 9:00am Monday and by 4:30pm, I still had no card. Strange... I figured they were just being their slow, usual selves and didn't bother checking at the desk... mistake!

Edited Tuesday: Update: Well, when I go back, there is still no slip in my box. So I go to the desk this time and inquire as to what the situation was with the mail in a polite manner. It turns out the card was put into the wrong box by someone else! To make matters worse though, he didn't check my ID when I signed so I could have essentially walked away with a package containing $800 of electronics if I felt like it. Ooops. I don't feel I should disclose the name of the employee here.
I noticed others are having similar troubles with the mailroom, and I don't know who's job it is, nor am I angry at every worker there, but please don't hire a dyslexic individual to put cards into numbered boxes. Thanks and to Jon, I hope you've been able to bring this to the manager's attention.

Rant finished. Thanks...

Jon D. Squicciarini 03-01-2011 09:28 PM

Hey everyone, I just wanted to let you all know I have a meeting with Kevin Healy on Friday to discuss the issue of the Post Office. I will let you all know what comes from it. I have shown him this forum already so he knows what is going on. Hopefully we can resolve some of these issues.

Hannah E. Wolfe 03-02-2011 03:50 PM

Just saying - I ordered a book February 25th, paid for expedited shipping by priority mail, the USPS website says it's been delivered, and guess what! I still don't have it. So, Drew owes me 8$ in shipping now.

I hope the meeting goes well.

Brandon W. Talley 03-03-2011 11:16 AM

Any Response from Kevin?

Jordan R. Stamper 03-03-2011 08:35 PM

I agree any response?

Jordan M. Maslin 03-04-2011 10:05 AM

Today's Friday. Anticipating response. Thank you Jon and hope the meeting is productive.

Jon D. Squicciarini 03-06-2011 02:18 AM

Hello everyone, I had an emergency wisdom teeth extraction and had to cancel our meeting, but will be meeting with him as soon as we get back from break. I will have a response for you when we are back on campus.

Hannah E. Wolfe 03-15-2011 09:40 AM

Just an interesting tidbit I thought I'd throw in here - I ordered books on February 23rd, one of which I selected priority shipping for which I mentioned in an earlier post. It was supposed to arrive by March 1st, it didn't, I contacted the shipper and she was as confused as I was about the book's whereabouts - especially since the USPS website noted its tracking number to have been delivered. After asking several times at the Drew mailroom (which the guy behind the counter was really nice and apologetic about), I called the Madison post office to ask if maybe they'd misplaced it or what the hell ever. They bitched at me and gave me attitude, insisting that if the package was processed that meant they'd already set it aside to be picked up by Drew. I went back to the mailroom, apologized to the guy and asked one last time if there was any chance he'd just missed it - I went into the mailroom WITH him and looked through all of the packages back there to no avail. I left for spring break Friday morning, came back Sunday, went to the mailroom yesterday and finally received this book.

Looking on the package itself, the tag from the person who shipped it says "FEB 25 2011 Priority Mail" - the writing in sharpie which I'm assuming comes from the Madison post office when sorting through mail that comes to Drew, since they explained their sorting process to me over the phone, has my mailbox number on it and the date 3-7-11. There is no reason why it should've taken a book shipped from West Virginia by priority mail over a week to get here.

So...just saying, maybe the problem is with the Madison post office getting sassy having to deal with Drew students' mail all the time, not necessarily Drew's mailroom. I totally agree with a lot of the complaints people have posted here and the mixups like mail going to the wrong boxes, being rude to students, etc. etc. etc. BUT, that's just something else to consider.

Rudi A. Jones 03-15-2011 04:13 PM

I've had a problem with the mailroom too: I went home for a weekend, and left some medication at home. This particular medication needs to be taken daily, and I'd already missed two days. My mother sent it to me PRIORITY NEXT DAY DELIVERY, and it arrived on...drumroll...Wednesday. After getting out of a long day of classes and work, I ran over around 4pm to pick up my package which I just *knew* was there. Nope. So the employee told me to go to the Madison post office (which I did), and then they sent me to the annex. Apparently, it is Drew's mail system's fault - not Madison's. The man at the Madison postal annex showed me exactly when all the packages, including my own, were picked up. I drove back to Drew, and it turns out that SURPRISE, my package was at Pepin and someone was to lazy or half ass to bring it over to the UC.

Another gripe I have that others seem to have as well is the lack of timely paycheck deliveries. We are suppose to have our checks AT THE LATEST on Friday morning, and every Friday except one this YEAR my check has not been on time, nor has anyone shown any effort to locate anybody's checks. I don't imagine any other Drew employees get paid late, so why should we?

Jon D. Squicciarini 03-15-2011 05:13 PM

Hey Everyone! I just emailed everyone in this forum with an update on what I heard from Kevin Healy (he manages the mail room). Hope it helps!
