installing GIMP, other software?

We were looking for a simpler editor than Photoshop to edit our screen capture images-- GIMP is the recommended one but I can't get it to install on my staff desktop. Anyone else successfully installed it? Photoshop is too complicated for what we want to do and Paint just doesn't do anything we want to do.

Also, I'm looking into installing a freeware or opensource screencasting software-- has anyone gotten something like Camstudio to work on staff/faculty computer?

The GIMP is as complicated as PhotoShop, which it's meant to replace, so I'm not sure what you would gain there.

Jenn, contact John Saul - he can work up some documentation on Photoshop CS4 for all of you so that you have directions for what you want to do in Photoshop but don't have to learn the whole program to do it.

We did have John do some training, but there are things in Photoshop that we need to do that photoshop treats as context-dependent (like drawing circles around things) and we struggle with being in the right contexts to do it.

I'm more worried about whether a free screencasting tool will load on our machines....

For taking screenshots for free, I use Jing. It's from TechSmith, the same people who make the high-end SnagIt and Camtasia tools.

Jing

Thanks, Axel! We've got someone working with Jing right now!
