Windows 7 now available for Drew laptop models
We are pleased to announce that Microsoft Windows 7 configurations are now available for owners of Drew-issued Lenovo ThinkPad Models T61, junior model T400, sophomore model T400, and SL400c and the Tablet X61*.

Since imaging between Microsoft Windows XP and Windows 7 cannot preserve the I: drive (where user data is stored), there are two methods for obtaining the new configuration.

1. You back up your own data and submit the laptop for imaging. This can be done while you wait unless any hardware problems are discovered. The process takes about 30 minutes to image and deploy.

2. If you need your data backed up, you will leave the laptop with the help desk while we back up your data, re-image, and then restore. The amount of data that needs to be backed up will affect the length of time this takes, but it will not be a "while you wait" service.

The upgrade also requires each student to buy a copy of Microsoft Windows 7 Pro media which provides a product key that will be used after graduation. The cost is $6 for the DVD and must be paid at the time of the software upgrade. You must keep this media because once you graduate, you have to enter the product key since you will no longer connect to the Drew network.

We are also strongly recommending that students DO NOT install the recently released Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 as we have not tested this release and cannot guarantee that it will not cause problems.

Finally, some juniors and seniors may want to install additional RAM in their machines, although the OS seems to run with stability on the current 2 GB RAM in those laptops. We can take orders for additional memory and will contact you when it arrives so it can be installed.

For questions or to schedule a time to have your computer upgraded to Windows 7, please email helpdesk@drew.edu with the subject "Windows 7" and which option above you choose in the body.

*Please note that faculty/staff laptops that need to run Host Access should not upgrade to Windows 7.

Finally, some juniors and seniors may want to install additional RAM in their machines,
Can you tell us how much it would cost to go from (for instance) 2mb to 4mb? I have a T400. Thanks.

I'm not in CNS, but I'd guess it's between $25 and $35. Maybe as high as $50, but it really depends on the type of RAM

Yeah, RAM's pretty cheap these days. Newegg has a single 4GB SODIMM for around $50, which is a pretty decent price for DDR3.

Going from 2 to 4MB is pretty hard, though, since most RAM comes in gigabytes now. ;)

And you don't have to buy the RAM from us. But if you do we'll install it for free. And the price will probably be in the $30 ish range. We'll just pass on directly the price from wherever we get it. The more we buy the better the pricing.

Ram Upgrades for Windows 7
We are now offering a Windows 7 Professional 64 bit image to students. According to Microsoft, the minimum RAM requirement for the operating system is 2GB. Most of our older laptops shipped with 2GB of RAM, so many students may choose to upgrade. The image has been tested with 2GB of RAM and it runs very well, even with the minimum. However, students who use their Drew laptops for activities that require better performance (eg photo editing, video editing, gaming) may choose to upgrade. Even if you don't do these kinds of things with your laptop, you may still choose to upgrade. Please review the following chart and find your computer model. The current amount and maximum amount of RAM are provided in this chart. We have also listed exactly how the current RAM is laid out in the computer. If you are unsure of what model you have, you may contact the Helpdesk at x3205 or log into http://technology.drew.edu.

Each model has two slots available for RAM.

  • The SL400c is already at its maximum amount of memory.
  • The T61, T400 P8600 and T400 4GB already have RAM sticks in both slots. In order to bring them to their max, you will have to purchase two sticks of RAM.
  • RAM varies in speed and design. Your computer's motherboard provides you with its RAM specifications. RAM that you purchase may fit inside your computer, but if it is not compatible with the motherboard, it can cause damage and performance issues.
  • The RAM upgrade is NOT a requirement. You can get the Windows 7 image without purchasing the RAM.
X61/T61 - One 2GB stick = $34
All T400 models - One 2GB stick = $23/One 4GB stick = $46

To place an order for RAM, please send an email helpdesk@drew.edu with the subject Ram Upgrade. In the email, please let us know how many sticks of RAM you would like to purchase. When we receive enough requests, we will place the order and charge your student account. Those who have placed an order will be contacted so they can have their RAM installed.

We have had to temporarily suspend the Windows 7 upgrades because the second batch of media we received were not the correct version of Windows 7. As soon as we receive our order with the correct media, we will resume the upgrades.

Unfortunately, four copies of the *incorrect* media have been given to students who received upgrades. If you upgraded recently, please check the media to make sure it is Windows 7 Professional, and not Windows 7 Ultimate. If it is the latter, please return it to the desk and pick up correct media once we have received it.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you!

We received our Windows 7 Pro media today and have resumed Windows 7 imaging. Please email helpdesk@drew.edu to make an appointment. Remember to use Windows 7 in your subject line.
