Technology Fee?!

Did anyone else get a "technology fee" on their billing statement?

Apparently, the computer service is charging us to have a Drew email account. Isn't that supposed to come with being in a college? I would be fine just using my yahoo account and save $63.

This has never appeared on my billing statement in the last 3 years I've been here - why now?

Technology fee

It's something new - it was in the Acorn last spring. It pays for some new services, including wireless networking in all the residence halls. That will be there when you get back in the fall. In addition, commuters (who don't live in the residence halls) will have a new service that allows them to obtain access to software on the network, such as SPSS, from their homes. Finally, we're working on improving the cell phone reception in the residence halls. That won't be ready by September, but we hope to announce a schedule for it this fall.

Wow, I didn't know you guys were making all of those changes. That certainly sounds worth $63 to me.

One other note - in order to support the wireless APs (which are 802.11 b/g/n) and provide better service to the rooms, we're replacing the old 10/100 switches with gigabit switches.

I'm with Aaron on this one - shouldn't it be covered in our already large tuition bill? I'm glad Drew is finally getting some sense to do this in the dorm buildings, but they should have done this a long time ago - and why are WE paying extra for it.

Where does the rest of my money go then? I'm a commuter and I could careless what is going on in the dorms. How about putting that money towards investing in better computers for students and better service at CNS. I have had this thing for almost 2 years and I'm pretty sure its spent more time in the storage closet in CNS than actually with me.

worrrrrrrrd up... what ever happened to sharing is caring???? drew needs to stop pushing so much on us... and jus foot the bill itself

Gregory R. Everitt 07-13-2009 02:58 AM

I don't see how that's any different. Where do you think their money comes from? Yes, there are endowments but I doubt that's Drew's main source of funds.

Oh, I forgot they said that. Okay, now I can understand being annoyed.
