They're too small to harm adult humans, but they will go after cats and small dogs.

I heard a few years ago that they are definitely making a comeback in the Northeast.

A note to the community:

What you are seeing is not an Eastern Coyote, but in fact, it is a Fox. Unfortunately, this particular resident of Drew University has a case of Mange, which has caused the fur on its tail to fall off. It now resembles a very small coyote, but like I said, it is in fact a Fox. It is rather friendly and you can get close to it due to semi-domestication, however, it will still bite if you try to touch it, so keep a distance and enjoy this wonderful fox from afar.

As a former employee of the NJ DEP and State Park Service, I can safely say that it is true the Eastern Coyote is making a huge comeback in NJ. I've seen many coyotes in the past 3-4 years, though none in the Madison area.
