Default GroupWise 8?

I was asked about this today, so I thought I would post some information here.

Novell released GroupWise version 8 in mid-November. Drew's GroupWise system is currently running release 7.0.3. We plan to upgrade to GroupWise 8 some time during the spring semester, but in the meantime please note that the newer GroupWise 8 clients available from the Novell web site will not work with our GroupWise 7 system. If you'd like to install a GroupWise 7 client on your computer, you can install the latest release of GroupWise 7 from the Application Explorer or download it from the CNS web site.

Once we have upgraded the backend to GroupWise 8, you will be able to use the new GroupWise 8 clients. Existing GroupWise 7 clients will also continue to work as well with no change in functionality and we are not planning to stop supporting the GroupWise 7 client anytime soon.

We are delaying the rollout of GroupWise 8 here at Drew while we review the experience of other sites that have rolled out the software. Most likely we will be upgrading the backend after Novell makes the first interim release of GroupWise 8 available. (As a rule, we don't like running a dot-oh release of anything, particullarly a critical application that the entire community relies upon).

Here are some links detailing the new features in GroupWise 8 that will be available once we've upgraded.Again, I anticipate that we will be seeing an interim release of GW 8 from Novell sometime later in the spring semester. Spring Break would be ideal, but I wouldn't count on it. Fortunately, GroupWise backend upgrades only require a few minutes of downtime at most per Post Office.
