Default cable at home?

My folks have a broadband cable connection but no wifi at home. If I simply unplug the cable from their desktop and plug it into my laptop should I be able to access the internet with no other setting modifications? TIA.

It should work. If all they've got is the cable modem (no router with firewall features) you probably want to enable the Windows firewall in Control Panel and check "no exceptions" prior to plugging the computer in.
