Default "A" vs. "an"

I usually opt for whatever works phonetically -- which (I believe) is the Chicago Manual of Style recommendation. Generally, it's whether or not the pronounced initial letter in the abbreviation begins with a vowel sound. "L" prounced as the letter has an "ell" sound, so it's "an". "K" is clearly pronounced without a leading vowel, so it would be "a KPMG employee".
