Question External mic on T420s

It's my understanding that the T420s has one 3.5mm jack for both audio input and output. I've been able to use the jack for output, but I can't get it to take input. (That is, if I attach a cassette tape player's output to the jack, I can't get Windows 7 to acknowledge that there's any audio input from the device.) Any suggestions?

It's in fact a jack designed for a headset, so you'll need something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Headset-Buddy-...m_cr_pr_sims_t

Default Please clarify...

I looked at the page you linked to. I'm not sure what that gizmo does. It's a two-to-one thing but I'm not sure what kind of two-to-one thing. And does it work with only an input (from a tape-player's output, for example)? And, by the way, the eSATAp connector doesn't fit on the T420. In general, I'm wondering why Lenovo doesn't make it easier to figure out how to connect to the computer's ports and jacks.

If you look more carefully at the connector that goes into the computer, there are three black rings on the plug. Each one of those rings is for input or output. Two of those rings are for stereo output and one of them for microphone input.

A normal stereo headphone will have a plug with two black rings. A microphone will usually only have the one ring on the plug. So if you use this Y cable from Amazon, you should be able to use only the Microphone (pink) plug and be able to have sound input without connecting something to the green headphone plug.

And I believe you are confusing the Displayport on the back of the T420s with an eSATA port.

Where's the eSATAp port? Is it one of the USB ports? If so, which one?

I don't have one in front of me at the moment, but I'm pretty sure the T420s does not have an eSATA port.

Default But...

Mike Richichi said it had an eSATAp port. I think it's a dual USB/eSATAp port.

Nope. The T420s I have in front of me does not have an eSATA port on it. There is USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 ports, DisplayPort, DC in port, Headphone jack, Ethernet, VGA port, and memory card slot. All the USB ports are only for USB and not the combo port like the picture I posted above.
