DREW SJP Presents: The Soldier and the Refusenik: Israeli Activists Speak Out
TO kick off the Israeli Apartheid week, Drew SJP Presents guest speakers Maya Wind and Eran Efrati on March 2 at 6:30 pm in LC 28. Two conscious anti-zionist Israelis will be sharing their experiences of Palestinian-Israeli struggle for justice and equality. They will discuss the events in Gaza and Jerusalem over the summer, direct action and protest in the West Bank and their efforts to educate the Israeli public about the occupation. They will also share their experiences of growing up in segregated Jerusalem and of their Zionist and militaristic education.
Eran Efrati, served as an IDF combat soldier in the West Bank. After he was discharged and joined Breaking the Silence, an organization of veteran Israeli soldiers working to raise awareness about the reality in the Occupied Territories. He worked as their chief investigator, collecting testimonies from IDF soldiers. His testimonies appear in the booklet “Operation Cast Lead" and his investigative reports appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Guardian.
Maya Wind, joined the Shministim movement and helped to establish the 2008 refusenik group. She refused to serve in the IDF and was sentenced to military prison and detention. After her release she co-lead the Jerusalem alternative education program of New Profile, the feminist movement for the demilitarization of Israel. She also guided political tours in East Jerusalem and the West Bank for the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions.
