It's against NCAA regulations for Div III schools to give money to athletes simply because they're athletes. They check up on these kinds of things too. You can check with the appropriate offices about this policy.

Could it possibly be that your lacrosse "boy" was actually financially needier than your friend? Or maybe that they weren't so far apart academically in high school?
