If you have your own Linux box, you can certainly configure Pine to work with GMail. There are a number of examples of configuration settings for GMail. Here's one:

You'll always need to use your full @drew.edu address as the username for the Google IMAP and SMTP servers. IMAP should be enabled on your Drew GMail account by default.
Drew doesn't currently provide a public shell account service to all students, although Computer Science students have a shell account for coursework.
