Default Trying to set up Drew email in Thunderbird

Hi so I am trying to set up my drew email in Thunderbird (again). I had done it earlier this summer following "https://uknow.drew.edu/confluence/display/techdocs/GroupWise+Client#GroupWiseClient-IMAPAccess"
but now for some reason I can only receive messages but cannot send any out. I tried to delete the account and redo it using the same website but it is the same result. I have been trying to figure this out for at least 2 weeks now. Can anyone help me figure this out? Thanks!!

Please confirm that these are the settings for the outgoing mail server:

Outgoing Mail Server
  • Address: gwsmtp.drew.edu
  • Port: 2525
  • Requires authentication: Yes, use the same username/password as incoming server.
  • Use secure connections (TLS): Enabled
Thanks.

I'm having a similar problem. I have set all the settings as described. I receive email fine, but every time I try to send an email I get an error message saying "Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server gwsmtp.drew.edu timed out. Try again or contact your network administrator.

Any help would be much appreciated

I double checked the outgoing server and I keep getting the same error sign as Andrew Davison.

Here are a couple of threads that might help you out:

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewto...f=39&t=1739085

http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/...ird-3-0-a.html

They are both more than a year old, but they may point you in the right direction. Are you using just your Drew username in the Account name field, rather than the whole username@drew.edu? That seems to be a common problem with the error you're experiencing.

This could be a more complex problem, so I would also heed whatever the CNS folks have to say about the issue.

I just verified that this is working on campus using Thunderbird 3.1 and Thunderbird 5.

Look at the settings for the outgoing smtp server, and then look at the Security and Authentication section. It should read:

Connection security: STARTTLS
Authentication method: Normal password
User Name: <your_uloginid> (i.e. jdoe , not jdoe@drew.edu)

We are using a self-signed certificate, so the first time you try to connect, you'll receive a pop-up window from Thunderbird telling you that you need to add a security exception. Check off 'Permanently store this exception' and Click on the Confirm Security Exception.

I just tried what Scott Wood suggested and I still get the "send message error" pop-up. I would ask CNS, but I am trying this on a non-drew computer.

I use Thunderbird 3.1 and I have written down below all the information

In account settings, under the Drew email account is the following incoming mail server information:
Server Type: IMAP
server name: gwimap.drew.edu
port: 993
username: evatsal
Connection security: ssl/tls
authentication method: normal password

Under outgoing server:
server name: gwsmtp.drew.edu
port: 2525
username: evatsal
authentication method: normal password
connection security: ssl/tls

When I try to send an email, using thunderbird, through the drew email account, it takes a while to connect to the outgoing server before giving me the error pop up: "Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server gwsmtp.drew.edu timed out. Try again or contact your network administrator."

That is everything so I don't know what is wrong

Under outgoing server, you need to choose STARTTLS for connection security, not ssl/tls
