Exclamation Employing Students on F/J Visas

Dear Colleagues,

It is heartwarming to see that many of you hire international students to work in your departments, that you make them full members of the Drew Community. However, if they are on an F1 or J1 visa, there are a few things you should know before hiring them.

1- They must have written authorization from International Student Services (ISS) before beginning work. Failure to do so is a violation of their legal status.
2- They cannot work more than 20 hours per week while school is in session. During breaks and vacations, they can work up to 40 hours per week. Any violation of this, even by half an hour, causes them to fall out of legal status. Employment must cease immediately, and the student must be reported to USCIS (formerly INS).
3- They must have a social security number before beginning work. This is Drew University's policy. Please ask if the student has a social security number - if they do not have one, it may take a few weeks to obtain one, thereby pushing their start date forward.

If you would like to hire a student on an F1/J1 visa, please contact me for a sample letter/template to create a job offer letter for the student to bring to ISS. Once ISS has the letter, we can authorize the work, and advise the student how to obtain a social security number.

Again, it's great that F1/J1 students are working on campus at Drew, but we must do our part to ensure the employment follows legal and university protocol. Thank you for your attention to this important matter. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at pcarletta@drew.edu.
