Unhappy Question

I recently discovered that every item I enter into a search engine (whether it be Google, Yahoo, etc.) yields a list of useless, entirely unrelated "spam" websites. I think this could be a virus of some sort but I'm not entirely sure. Also, I tried to run the f-prot virus scan but it would not work. I am fairly certain that this just happened within the hour, because I was using these search engines successfully earlier today. Does anyone know what problem this could be, and the steps that I should take to fix it? My computer is currently shut down, and I am using another one to write this message.

Thanks for your help,
